Lent is traditionally a time set aside to intentionally grow in faith. Sometimes the practice of faith-discipline is exercised by denial – giving something up for Lent. Another way, or additional way, to practice a faith-discipline is by taking something on. This year I’d like to encourage you to participate in either one or two of the Lenten studies we will be offering at Bethel.
One option is a study entitled Victory and Peace or Justice and Peace? DVD presentations by John Dominic Crossan will compare and contrast the Roman idea of peace through force and coercion with the Christian idea of peace grounded in God’s justice. Our discussion following the presentations will allow us to explore how these contrasting ways are still at work in our world today. More information can be found about these presentations at www.livingthequestions.com/crossan.html. One offering of this series will be available on Sunday mornings during the regular Bible Study time. You are welcome to come for these four sessions even if you are not able to attend the other Bible Study sessions regularly.
Another option is a discussion centered around a moving book of a personal journey, Our Daughter Martha: A Family Struggles with Coming Out, by Marcy Clements Henrikson This paperback book is just 130 pages. Although this book is an “easy read,” the personal and faith issues it raises may provoke some rather difficult discussions. Come prepared to listen and to share with an open mind and a loving heart. Books are available for $10 or free to any who have need. A copy of the book can be previewed in the narthex at the sign-up table. See the last page of the newsletter for the cover description. See the page opposite for the Schedule of Study Offerings. Please sign-up in the narthex or call the church office.
