A Message from the Pastor
Now that Spring is in its full beauty I am astounded….again! The beauty of the world, the warmth of sun, the refuge of shade under a harboring tree, the energy of the grass in this year that’s conducive to its growth inspires. Even the resilient sycamore tree outside my office window that showed signs of real stress last year is rebounding. (Note that I am writing before the onslaught of any cicadas yet.)
Being surrounded by such beauty presses me to consider other forms of beauty…like beauty in the soul.
I suppose that Protestants in general, but reformed Protestants in particular are suspicious of such fanciful attitudes. Beauty in the soul? I can hear my Grandmother’s redirection of such a question: “Get your head out of the clouds and get back to mowing the lawn.” Beauty to her was a clothesline full of whites, rung by hand through the ringer and gently blowing in the breeze. Bring them in off the line and I always thought that the fresh smell was…well…beautiful.
Some traditions honor “Saints” – people of beautiful souls who show the rest of us about grace and peacefulness in spirit, about resiliency in humor (ever read Mother Teresa?), about how to carry yourself so that you aren’t pulled into the mire.
Ever know any saints? I’m a believer. Grandma was one of them – ironically beautiful in her no-nonsense disdain of such philosophies of beauty. I’ve known others too who “shone” (was that a halo?) with what it means to be fully human and yet embody a soul that is not “of the world.” In fact I believe each of us has that beauty just lurking below the surface.
But it definitely helps to see it in others. It helps when you’re trying to find it in that person that is always most mysterious – yourself. When you see it shine in a living, breathing person that light of recognition clicks in and we say, “Aha! That’s what it looks like, in the words of a familiar benediction, to be at peace, to hold fast to what is good and not return evil for evil, to strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, help the afflicted, honor all people, and to love and serve the Lord rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Praise be for saints among us who shine with God’s light.
Rev. Stephen Schuette
Council Notes
On May 5th I participated in Bethel's annual Spring clean up event. I arrived a bit past 8a.m. that Saturday and many members of our congregation were already hard at work picking weeds, trimming the gardens and dusting inside the sanctuary. When I asked David Hartlage the event coordinator what I could do he pointed to sixteen yards of mulch and said "can you spread that around the memorial garden, landscape areas and the flower boxes"? Bill Lyman was already pitching in and Jim Dondlinger arrived shortly thereafter. Those of you who've never worked on any task with Jim and Bill owe it to yourselves to try it sometime. We then had an all-hands-on-deck moment after two wheel barrow tires flattened and our hand pumps could not generate any magic to inflate the tires. With difficulty (and shovels) the mulch was finally spread. David returned around eleven that morning with a new wheel barrow. I chalk this one up to another classic Bethel team experience and project--one where we get together as a community, help our church and learn a little about each other. Oh, and we'll start next year's project with a wheel barrow that's ready for business. Don't forget the donuts.

The Bethel Spring Clean-Up Day was held on the morning of May 5 under the direction of David Hartlage. The following Bethel members participated: The Hartlage Family, Betty Jump, Ardathe Lindberg, Fern Wilson, Linda Lyman, Barbara Vegter, Red Beebe, Jim LaPalermo, Jim Dondlinger, Brian Barrett, Bill Lyman, and Darrell Wilson. Activities included cleaning of sanctuary (windows inside and out, scuff mark removal, vacuuming), repairs (outside cable secured, light fixtures), litter pickup, weeding, topsoil spreading (3 cubic yards), mulch spreading (16 cubic yards). The hard work put in by those participating is greatly appreciated and the benefits are enjoyed by the entire Bethel congregation.
An updated Wish List is posted in the Narthex. Items include a digital projector and the replacement of incandescent bulbs with low energy compact fluorescent bulbs costing $500.00. These compact fluorescent bulbs will save energy and be environmentally friendly.
The roof on the Poplar parsonage has been replaced and the trim on the house will be painted in the near future.

Summertime BYF....Work and Fun
It's amazing to think that another school year has come to an end! WOW!!
We have some activities on the calendar already but want you to know that we will not keep the 1st and 3rd Sunday as meeting dates since we already see some conflicts. Please watch for email, read church bulletins and newsletters or call us, 630-941-1037, for information.
On Saturday, June 23rd, we have an opportunity, through the Human Concerns committee, to spend the morning at Casa Central, in the Logan Square area of the city. We will most likely work on a painting and weeding project. We will leave the Bethel parking lot at 8 a.m. And return at about noon. Casa Central is an agency with which Bethel has had a relationship for MANY years. Come along and see what goes on there!
Another “little” project that we would ask our teenage girls for help with came up recently. Gillian Fealy, Bob Fealy's 20-something year old daughter, has created a plan to provide magazines to teenage girls who are ill and being treated at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. A drop box can be found near the rear church door. Please leave current and not-so-current magazines there so they can be taken to the hospital to bring some joy to those girls. Then....say a prayer for young people who are seriously ill and a prayer of thanks for how fortunate you are!
The August 2-10 houseboat and work trip to Rock Island is organized. We still have things to discuss and would like to have the opportunity to meet with those who have committed as well as those who are still thinking about it. Please join us for a meeting on Sunday, June 10th after church. We will be calling and emailing you too.
It's hard to believe that we will have 10 BYF kids going away to school in the fall. They have been the backbone of the group and we will really miss them. They have been especially good at working on service projects that have literally benefited people around the world. We feel honored that they have remained involved in these projects with us. They are:
Ryan Biesterfeld - Augustana College
Andrew Davis - Miami of Ohio University
Charlie Fiedler - Augustana College
Tom Lampo - California Institute if Technology
Erica Lockerbie - University of Iowa
Dan Murphy - University of Illinois
Alex Oberlin- Bradley University
Kyle Stipe- Bradley University
Patrick Schwartz- University of Iowa
Reed Sundberg- Augustana College
This is pretty amazing! Please congratulate them when you see them!
Finally, we are sad to tell you that Justin and Janelle Woodward and their little one, Cole, will be moving to Miami. Janelle has accepted a new position with a financial planning firm and Justin, who still works for Accenture, has been assigned to a project in Orlando. We thank them for their involvement with the group and wish them well! Thanks! The Ds
Music Ministry
I would like to thank our Bethel musicians whose participation in our May 13 Music Sunday made for an extraordinary worship service. First, I must commend Linda Lunt for her excellent direction of the handbell choirs. For those of you who have not worked with Linda, she is a joy to have on staff and her handbell expertise has certainly proven itself in her work with our Bethel ringers. Jenny, Fe and Marlene – your solo singing was as per usual gorgeous and most moving. As always, it is a great treat to play organ and piano duets with my Bethel duet partner Linda Lyman. The Adult Voice choir has woven into an even tighter musical ensemble this year, culminating in our Music Sunday service(s) and the magnificent job learning and performing John Rutter’s Magnifcat. Also, it was a great treat to have our Youth Voice choir sing in service, we will be doing more worship participation next year!
As always our Bethel musicians are to be commended, for their hard work and dedication to our Music Ministry inspires our congregation weekly. Last but not least, I would like to personally thank Pastor Steve for his constant encouragement and support of our Bethel Music Ministry as well as his participation in the voice choir.
I know I can speak for both Linda Lunt and myself in saying that we always encourage more of our Bethel members and friends to join our musical ensembles. PLEASE feel free to contact us if you have questions about joining our Music Ministry.
I would like to also thank Jenny Riddle for her outstanding May 7 performance as part of the Monday Evening Concert Series. It is a very difficult task to perform for family and dear friends, and Jenny rose to the occasion with her usual grace, charming personality and deep musical and vocal aplomb. Brava Jenny!
Our Bethel summer worship, Word and Note of the Spirit, will again be held on the first and third Thursday of June, July and August at 7:30 p.m. We will be examining several stories from Ezekiel and Revelations; the premise of the service being that Pastor Steve presents a meditation on the text and I play a fitting classical music meditation on the text each service. Please join us for this unique worship opportunity.

Health Hints – June 2007
Greetings! This month I'd like to share with you from Advocate Congregational Health Partnerships "Congregational Health Quick Hit" Vol. 7 #5 some Advice to Take . . . WITHOUT a Grain of Salt!
Blood pressure readings provide a quick picture of the heart's health. High blood pressure, a.k.a. hypertension, is sometimes called "the silent killer" because there are often no symptoms. That's why an annual blood pressure check is a wise idea.
If your blood pressure is higher than 120/80, reducing your salt and sodium intake is one easy step to take to help bring it down. Although we need very little salt - just 1/4 teaspoon a day - Americans typically consume ten or more times that amount!
Here's a quick quiz to see what you know about reducing salt and sodium intake. From the list below, identify the five seasonings which ought to be avoided.
Bouillon cubes Garlic powder Onion powder
Capers Garlic salt Rosemary
Cumin Ketchup Soy sauce
Fresh garlic Mustard Thyme
The salty, high sodium seasonings are bouillon cubes, capers, garlic salt, ketchup, and soy sauce. Other tips for reducing salt in your diet: eat fresh or frozen rather than canned vegetables. Avoid smoked or cured meats such as ham, bacon, sausage and hot dogs. Stay away from cheeses, salty snacks, canned soups, pickles, and olives.
Your taste buds can be your guide. If a food is salty, either choose a different food or season it differently. You'll be amazed at how delicious well-seasoned but unsalted food can be!
Prayer: Creator of the universe, you have provided us with all we need. Help me be mindful of the difference between needs and wants. I sometimes forget to take care of this miraculous body you have given me. Keep me alert to its tending, thankful for its health, and eager to use it in your service. Amen.
Kathy Murray, RN
Human Concerns
FOOD PANTRY In June we will be collecting pasta and noodles to be distributed by the local food pantries. Please leave your donation in the basket just inside the North entrance.
HUMAN CONCERNS WORK TRIP Saturday, June 23rd, 8 a.m. – Noon. Please join us! We will carpool to Casa Central in Chicago’s Logan Square. Work involves outdoor weeding and planting and indoor painting. All able-bodied individuals are welcome. Sign up in the narthex and call Ann LaPalermo with questions.
Pass It On Our Pass it On Campaign came to an end on May 20th when 10 people shared their stories. We have 42 different people and families to thank for making it a success. They chose 40 different causes, many reflecting concerns very dear to people's hearts. The original gift of $2,500 grew to well over $5,000 of giving. Three more people were inspired to take an envelope on Sunday. The money left over will be sent to Darfur and will be directed to them by the World Relief Fund. There is a Pass It On notebook on view in the library with all the stories.
OUR MISSION One of the charities we support, Marion Medical Mission, reported that in 2006 they installed 1,093 wells in Malawi, Tanzania and Zambia providing clean drinking water to over 250,000 people. Since 1990 they have installed wells serving an estimated 1,400,000 people with fresh, clean, water.

Giving Opportunity… Anyone 70½ years of age with an IRA is required to take distributions from the IRA, which would normally be taxable. For 2007 it is possible to make charitable contributions directly from your IRA and the amount of that distribution is excluded from your gross income from that year, thus avoiding a capital gains tax on the distribution. Note that it is necessary for the distribution to go directly from the IRA to the charity; the individual must not take receipt of it. Refer to the UCC website: http://www.ucc.org/finance/fd/ppa2006.htm or your financial advisor for more information.
Women of Bethel
LADIES SPRING LUNCHEON OUT at the Renaissance Hotel in Oak Brook will be on June 11th at 11:30 a.m. Please sign up in the narthex or by contacting the church office.
Letters
To my Bethel Friends,
Thank you for all of the cards sent and prayers offered on my behalf following my recent surgery. I am grateful at a time like this to be a part of such a warm and loving congregation.
Thanks, too, to Pastor Steve, Pastor Sally and Nurse Kathy for their visits to the hospital and now to our home as I continue to recover. Ed and I miss being with you and we hope it won’t be long before we’re back in church.
Sincerely,
Dorothy Rowe
